Cooler Rugs
Cooler blankets help the horse dry quickly and evenly after riding or training. They keep the horse warm and prevent it from getting cold.
Fleece cooler rugs
After work the coat is damp, and a wet horse chills fast – especially in winter and especially at the neck and over the croup. A cooler rug takes up the moisture and moves it outwards, where it evaporates. The horse dries faster and stays warm doing it. 6 items from 11 to 79 euro.
Why fleece
Polar fleece does not soak through like cotton; it carries moisture out through the material. That is why the rug feels damp on the outside while the horse underneath is drying. After about half an hour the job is done – then the rug comes off, or it starts holding cold against the horse.
With or without a neck cover
Without a neck cover from 25 euro for short sessions. With a neck cover at 39 euro, for horses that sweat on the neck or are clipped there. With neck cover and belly flap at 45 euro, which covers the belly as well. The 4-in-1 multifunction rug at 49 euro converts as needed, and the Classic Equine premium cooler with neck at 79 euro is the top of the range.
Accessories
The stretch surcingle at 11 euro keeps the rug in place when the horse rolls or fidgets.
Not in the rain
Fleece is not waterproof. A cooler belongs on a supervised horse, not out in the rain – that calls for a rain rug.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the cooler stay on?
Until the coat is dry, usually half an hour. Then take it off, or the damp rug holds cold against the horse.
Fleece or cotton?
Fleece. It moves moisture on instead of storing it, and dries quickly itself.
Do I need a neck cover?
If the horse sweats heavily at the neck or is clipped there, yes.
Can cooler rugs be washed?
Yes, fleece is easy to care for. Follow the stated temperature and skip fabric softener – it clogs the fibres and the rug wicks less well.
